Why We Work with Locally-Based Partners

By Sarah Hegland, Programs Manager, Penny Appeal USA

In today’s globalized world, aid organizations have the option to either establish their own offices in various regions or partner with local organizations.  While setting up offices might seem like the obvious choice for expansion, we at Penny Appeal USA have consciously chosen to work with locally-based partners instead.  Here’s why this approach not only aligns with our values but also offers numerous advantages for our organization and the communities we serve.

  1. Deep local expertise

No one understands a region’s culture, politics, and nuances better than those who live and work there.  By collaborating with locally-based partners, we tap into their deep-seated knowledge and expertise.  This allows us to navigate the local landscape more effectively, tailoring our services to meet the specific needs of each community.

  1. Supporting local economies

By working with local partners, we’re able to support and stimulate local economies.  Instead of diverting resources to establish and maintain a new office, we channel those resources into partnerships that empower local organizations and businesses.  This not only creates jobs but also strengthens the communal and economic fabric of the region, fostering a more sustainable and inclusive aid model.

  1. Cost efficiency

Establishing and maintaining offices in multiple regions can be costly and resource-intensive.  By partnering with local organizations, we can reduce overhead expenses while still maintaining a strong presence in key areas.  This cost efficiency allows us to allocate more resources toward developing innovative programs that serve our beneficiaries better.

  1. Agility and flexibility

The aid environment in any given country is dynamic and constantly evolving.  Having locally-based partners enables us to be more agile and responsive to changes.  These partners are often more nimble and adaptable, capable of quickly adjusting to economic, environmental, and political shifts.  This flexibility is crucial for continuing to meet local people’s needs.

  1. Building stronger relationships

Relationships are the cornerstone of any successful aid organization.  Working with local partners helps us build stronger, more meaningful connections with the communities we serve.  These partnerships are based on mutual trust and respect, leading to long-term collaborations that benefit both parties.  Our local partners are integral members of our extended team, working with us to achieve common goals.

  1. Sustainability and reduced carbon footprint

Sustainability is at the heart of our operations.  Setting up offices globally would significantly increase our carbon footprint through travel, construction, and operational energy use.  In contrast, partnering with local organizations allows us to minimize our environmental impact.  Our partners already have the infrastructure and networks in place, reducing the need for additional resource consumption.

  1. Focus on core competencies

By relying on local partners for regional operations, we can focus on what we do best.  This division of labor allows us to concentrate on our core competencies while our partners handle the aspects in which they are experts.  This synergistic approach ensures that every part of our organization is managed by those who know it best, leading to better outcomes for our beneficiaries, partners, and donors.

Conclusion

Our decision to work with locally-based partners instead of establishing our own offices is not just a strategic organizational choice; it’s a reflection of our commitment to creating value in a way that is ethical, sustainable, and community-focused.  By leveraging local expertise, fostering economic growth, and minimizing our environmental impact, we believe this approach not only benefits Penny Appeal USA and our donors, but also contributes positively to the global community.
